The simple way to find keywords

Keywords... the great mistery!

Most of us think we know what a good keyword is ... until we try to find them or at least try to find more than 10.

The secret to good keywords is not in the number we can think of but how we go about targeting our market more effectively.

Here is a simple strategy to put it all into place:
  1. List your entire websites topics on one page. Think of topics under sub-headings, topics within the content and related topics you may have linked with books or other websites.
  2. Now think outside of the square which is your market. Try to think of what your potential clients might think they need within your market. Say for instance you have a recipy website, think about products which your market might be interested in, which attract a large market and add a page if necessary or at least a link on your website to a recommended company.
  3. Now, group your various topics into distinct groups. Break those groups down again into even smaller markets and now you should have at least 20 different groups to target.
  4. Create an ad for each group
  5. Research keywords within that specific group and include those within your specific ad
  6. Redirect the link to the specific page of your website and be ensure to include links within the page to other pages on your website to increase your visitors time they are within your website.

It is as easy as that!

You should reach a wider but more targetted market using this method!

Money earning markets

Some of use like to know what markets to target. We at Monkey-Marketing.com always advise choosing a topic you are personally interested in and that you know a fair bit about to create valuable and solid content which will not only help to get advertising on your website but create onflow business for your readers.

There are however some markets which no matter how much we may love them, will never capture sufficient visitors within the internet world to really take off and make money for us.

In these circumstances one needs to assess the market you are targetting and the possiblities within that market. You may create a wonderful website all about "making cookies". You discover that there is simply no money in this market (this is just an example - there may be a market) However, by using specific market research tools (as discussed in the Market Research chapters) you may discover that there is infact a huge market for low-fat cookie recipies - this is not perhaps the initial market you were targetting but by researching your market by using software tools like Keyword Elite, you discover that there is infact a fantastic market which you did not know about, still allowing you to make your cookie website successful.

What about targeting specific "earning" markets
You can simply find the markets which are untapped by using the Keyword Elite program and targeting that market. - read the case study - look under recommended ebooks....

Using competition to earn an income

In traditional marketing we often shy away from markets where there is said to be alot of competition. Competition in traditional forms of marketing means spending more on advertising, having to be "clever" with marketing and is often a difficult uphill climb for newcomers entering the market. We shy away from the "big players" or where there is a strong monopoly of players.

With internet marketing this is however the exact market you want to target! WHAT?????

When you consider your market for a product, you will likely consider the typical advertising format of using Google and PPC advertising. This is a costly area if you intend to compete with the "big players". However, what has been established is that those "big players" are not likely to a) go to too much detail with how they advertise and b) are constantly seeking new places to advertise.

So taking factor a) into account.
When choosing keywords the big players are not likely to focus too much on detailed keyword selection. They are more likely to simply pick the broaded keywords they can find and then simply pay whatever is necessary for them to be in the top page of the searches for that keyword. As a new business entering the same market you therefore have a distinct advantage.... you can seek out those keywords which are still getting the high searches but where the "big players" can't be bothered to look fo them. Hint: Using software tools like Keyword Elite makes this process alot easier. So if we were to consider the "home loan" market, you may find that searches for keywords like "Cheap home loan" or " Compare home loan" are likely to be bombarded with competition, however if you were to look up keywords related but not necessarily broad for that same market, say: "Fixed interest rates versus variable interest rates". You are likely to find less competition but still be able to tap into this very lucrative market.

Point b) - Seeking new places to advertise
The "big players" don't waste their time searching for niche keywords and they are constantly seeking places to advertise their products. Some of these "big players" pay volumes to their advertising displayed. Image how beneficial it would be to get those "big players" to advertise on your website? You could create a website which targets the mroe niche areas of hte same market, tap into those keywords and then place adwords advertising in distinct places on that page, commanding sometimes $4-$8 per click! This is money in your pocket by targeting those markets.

Moppit Suggestion: Link yourself with "big players" who are not competition but have something to gain from your lucrative market and you will automatically get good rankign with google saving you on advertising costs and possibly outranking your big players websites and automatically increasing their advertising spend with you!

How Market Research can save you money

When you first develop your website you may not be aware of the potential markets your product attracts. If your website is being designed for the specific purpose of making an income from it, you need to research your market carefully to determine if there is even a demand for the products or services that you offer.

Sometimes one can fall into "beginners luck" within a given internet market. Some people for instance may not have known when they commenced their Dog Collar business that there was such a huge market for Dogs.

How to determine a strong market
There are some basic steps which can determine whether you have tapped into an "automatic" lucrative market. Firstly, establish how many advertisers there are for the given product you are seeking to sell. Important: don't just assume because there are high advertisers for a keyword, that therefore there is a demand for a product. Search for the specific product you are seeking to sell. So if you are selling an ebook type into Google the Ebook topic you are seeking to sell. If you find there are alot of advertisers for that paticular ebook, you are likely to find there is a market for your product. You can also asses this by searching for your ebook in the clickbank marketplace (review chapter on affiliate marketing to find out more)

If you have found your product is listed highly on these lists, there is likely to be a market for your product. However...... you may wish to fill a niche market - now what?
This is obviously targeting your market from a different angle but you need to determine that there is a definate interest in what you are proposing to sell. This can be done by looking at the Google Keywords tool and determining how many people are searching for your given keyword.
If you are not finding sufficient searches for your product, you may find the road to marketing and earning money from you given market very very challenging.

It is like trying to sell a product that no-one needs or are looking for - it is an uphill climb.

We are not trying to discourage you here....
You may be onto something fantastic, something which no-one else has thought of and which could provide you with an untapped market. Consider however the level of marketing investment versus market demand for what you are considering.

Why you need to Market your website

Many people believe they can simply create a website and they will automatically have people looking at their website. This may have been the case when the world-wide-web first launched but unfortunately there are now billions of websites and various different topics which are covered.
If your intention is simply to have a website for existing clients and friends and family, then perhaps the need to market your website are not important, however if your intention is to turn your website into a true money earning potential, it is crucial that there is some level of marketing.
No-one will know who you are unless you are seen regularly by your market.

The challenge with marketing

Marketing within a business is standard or should be regardless of what your business interests are. You are likely to need some form of marketing, even if you have no intention of marketing online.

The benefits of online marketing

The biggest benefit of online marketing versus traditional marketing forms is that online marketing can become viral unlike traiditional forms which are not as easily transferred to others. If you take a simple example of receiving a letter or flyer in the mailbox.... UNLESS you were superbly impressed with this form of advertising, you are unlikely to ever pass it onto a family member you know or friends that live around the corner. AND unless you are personally interested and have the time to read the flyer or letter you are likely to through it in the bin.
With online marketing, you can target very specific niches and you are not wasting their time as they have often looked for information on a paticular topic. Online marketing is much more effective at reaching a specific audience and that audience is more open to reading information as that is the very reason they have logged onto the internet in the first place.

The other major benefit of online marketing versus traditional marketing is, it is available 24hrs a day and to a wider market. This can be crucial to a very niche market which may not attract sufficient clients within a small regional area but given the opportunity they could target the whole world with that product.

What are common forms of internet marketing

The standard forms of internet marketing are PPC advertising or those ads you see labeld "sponsored links" placed by Google or Yahoo. The standard forms of internet advertising are banner ads and classified ads.
These forms of advertising need to be carefully monitored and your target market needs to be considered carefully for them to work effectively.

There are however less obvious forms of advertising which are rapidly taking over the above mentioned methods. These include article marketing, "social marketing" and quite dramatic VIRAL marketing methods.

Moppit tip: All forms of advertising should always use a standard brand name to create awareness, whether it is conscious or unconscious to the viewer.

Cost comparison of Internet Marketing verus traditional marketing

Marketing is also considerably cheaper in comparison to traditional forms of advertising. Placing a newspaper advertisement within a local newspaper is likely to cost a few hundred dollars but placing an advert on a page within a Google Search is only likely to cost a few cents and then only when viewers actually click on the advertisement (so it has captured their attention to some degree)

Measurable statistics

The other benefit of marketing online is that every advertisement placed can be measured with how many view it has had to how many clicks it has had. This demonstrates a safe way to test the market you are targetting and one can determine the success or failure of using a specific heading or capturing terms. With newspaper advertising you may not even have a person look at the ad or it may be incorrect in wording therefore not capturing the interest of the readers you are trying to aim at. You as the marketer cannot measure this effectively within newspaper advertising.

What methods to use

There are so many different ways of advertising and marketing your website. We discuss all the options on our website: http://www.monkey-marketing.com/. Visit the MARKETING YOUR WEBSITE chapter.

Why Affiliate Marketing is hard to do

When developing a Marketing Strategy many internet marketers use Google or Yahoo and use what is commonly called PPC advertising.

Essentially you are placing advertising which is associated to a search done on these major search networks. The problem is that the predominance of the market uses the most common and broad keywords.
You will find that the keywords that you initially think of, are already flooded with competitors and it is very expensive to be placed on the top page of the search engines.

Keyword Software

There are many companies which taylor specific software programs which seek to make the process easier to find those keywords. They essentially are like huge thesaurus modules or dictionaries which create a huge list of keywords which then eliminates the long and tedious process of coming up with these keywords on your own.
The problem is.....
These keywords selected by the typical software tools are not always the ones that people search for. Having software tools certainly helps in coming up with many keywords, where most of them can come up with a list of over 1000 words within a few minutes. The difficulty is how to determine which of those are actually "matching" your target audience.
You may feel for instance that using words like "trianing my dog" are the most likely keywords to target when in fact you may find that more specific and more narrow keywords will not only attract your market to be more interested in your advertising but you are likely to find less competition within that keyword aswell.

How to succeed with PPC

The key to successful PPC advertising is in fact to be as narrow as you can and place many different advertisements which target that specific narrow market, rather than trying to place one ad hoping it will cover all the 1000's of keywords which you have selected.
This is what is called by Google as a "bad user experience". Ultimately, you are better off creating a seperate ad which focuses on a specific area within your market. Using specific keywords which target a specific area within your market. Make sense? For instance, you could take the dog example as mentioned before and focus on specific behaviourial issues, then specific dog breeds and you could even focus on specific issues people have with owning dogs - hayfever, losing dogs etc.
You want to take every topic which falls within your market and advertise within that specific market, using specific keywords within that area.

The key to effective advertising

Most advertisers on the internet simply place one advert, whack in about 2000 keywords under that advert and hope that someone searching will see there ad and see relevance to it. This is simply not logical.
Lets say you were searching for: Training my Beagle....
If you saw an advert saying: Solve your dog training problems in 3 easy steps and you saw: Solve your beagle training problems within 3 easy steps....
which one are you more likely to click through on?
Naturally you will pick the one that pertains more specifically to your individual problem. It is not relevant that your product might solve ALL DOG PROBLEMS but rather that your advertising appeals to a more niche market.

Why most advertisers don't do this

It is simply alot more detailed work. However, by using a simple keyword tool you can still get a long list of keywords but it is important to then apply those keywords within your market to specific areas of your market.

You will be amazed how many more keywords you will find available and areas which have not been covered by marketers on the internet which offers you a cheaper and more effective way of advertising.

Moppit Tip:
When you place your link to your website within the link area of your advertising, make sure you direct the link to the relevant page of your website or ensure you create a mention of that market within your sales page.
